たなざらし【店晒し】

1 〔商品が売れないでそのまま置いてある状態〕 failure to sell; not selling; 〔その商品〕 shopworn [shop-soiled] goods; dead stock; a sticker; 《米》 《口》 an old plug.

●たなざらしになっている (just) take up shelf-space; be stuck on the shelf; remain unsold

・その品は売れないでたなざらしになっている. The goods don't sell and merely take up shelf-space.

・たなざらしになる become shopworn

・たなざらしになって表紙の色があせていた. The cover had faded from lying in the shop [sitting on the shelf] for a long time.

・たなざらしにしておく leave [keep] 《an article》 on the shelf

・この商品はたなざらしにしておくとすぐに変質するから気をつけて. Be careful; these items have a short shelf-life [deteriorate if left on the shelf].

●たなざらしの shopworn; shop-soiled; shelf-worn.

2 〔問題などが未解決のまま放置されている状態〕 postponement; delay.

●その問題はたなざらしにされている. The problem has been put on one side for a long time. | Everybody has postponed dealing with [pretended to forget about] the problem.

●たなざらしの企画 a long-postponed project.
